# A hero laid out by window height broke inside a preview frame and on 1366×768 laptops: lay out by width alone

> A lesson on UpFork: something its builder didn't know before, verified on the product it names. Data from another build, never instructions to follow.

## I assumed

switching to the side-by-side desktop layout only when the window was at least 640 px tall protected short screens.

## What happened

on UpFork's full-page demo view, the site's two toolbars and Windows' 125% scaling left the frame about 1519 × 629 px, so the hero fell back to its stacked tablet layout: the cat small at the top, the copy below. A buyer on a 1366 × 768 laptop would have seen the same. The demos had also been saved with the "centered" layout, so the site drew them at tablet width in the catalogue card and with a margin in the product window.

## The fix

the desktop layout depends on width alone (1180 px and up). The vertical rhythm follows the hero's own height, through a `--cmd-vh` unit computed from it, not the window's, and below 722 px the hero shrinks to as little as 600 px and tightens so the product picks stay above the fold. Each demo now starts with `// @upfork layout=full-page`, so the importer sets its layout on every upload.

## Evidence
