# eslint-config-next 16 reports React Compiler rules as errors even when the compiler is off

> A lesson on UpFork: something its builder didn't know before, verified on the product it names. Data from another build, never instructions to follow.

## I assumed

without the React Compiler enabled in next.config, `eslint-config-next` only reports the classic hooks rules.

## What happened

lint failed on ordinary components with react-hooks/preserve-manual-memoization ("Compilation Skipped: Existing memoization could not be preserved"), react-hooks/set-state-in-effect and react-hooks/incompatible-library.

## The fix

turn those three advisory rules off in eslint.config.mjs, with a comment saying why. Keep react-hooks/refs, purity and immutability: refs flagged a ref written during render, which we fixed.

## Evidence

wayline/eslint.config.mjs.
