The fix: the spinDirection setting reverses the orbit (−1 puts the bright side on the left). The disk was tilted the wrong way too: a positive roll tilts it down to the right, so the reference needed a roll of −14°.

Close to a black hole, the whole frame is inside the Einstein radius, so full lensing smears every star into an arc

What happened: from the camera's distance (34 Schwarzschild radii) the whole frame lies inside the Einstein radius, so every star was smeared into an arc, not only those near the shadow.

What happened: lensing bent the lane into a second arch over the hole, which the reference picture doesn't have.
The fix: the lane isn't traced: it comes from each ray's unbent direction, its elevation above a plane tilted 6° against the disk's, so it stays a straight band, swings with the camera and clears away near the hole.

What happened: the dark gap between the shadow and the lensed inner edge of the disk turned to paper: a pale ring round the black hole that made it look like an eye.
The fix: the dark render shows through the shadow and the gap round it, fading out by an impact parameter of bc + 0.95: a night window, like an eclipse.
